I thought I would start a fat blog so we could get some feedback from the public and people could learn from others while giving some information to the rest of us. What I have been doing is increasing the exercise and cutting out the breads, pasta, sugars and to my chagrin the wine and beer! And for the first time this year I have hit the 174 mark heading from 185 to 160. It is a bitch, but I figure I’ll suck it up and try to get it done so I can get back to enjoying some good food ( in moderation of course ) with close weight monitoring so it doesn’t get away from me again. Today for lunch I had spinach salad with some small carrots , and tomatoes with tuna and vinegar and oil. Breakfast was eggbeaters with peppers and onions along with two crisp pieces of bacon. I did sneak in 2 chocolate covered strawberries at my daughters valentine party and 2 small pieces of dark chocolate. Oh, I forgot, between breakfast and lunch I had some beef jerky and a small apple (damn that sounds like a lot).

Well today was 174.40 weigh in at 0630! Yeah! Two days below 175 in a row! Three mugs of Coffee 3 strips crisp bacon and 2 over easy eggs for breakfast, apple and 10 (count ‘em 10) almonds for a snack then screwed the pooch with 15 lightly breaded fried shrimp with veges at the chinese place for lunch (skipped the rice). I guess i better go to the Gym and work extra hard this PM. Man this is hard!

Well, I did pretty well until VALENTINES day stayed below 175 on my way to 160, but then that notorious holiday took me to dinner. the food was delicious. Med rare filet with 2 bacon wrapped large shrimp after a crab cake appetizer on a bed of baby greens (trying to fool you that eating that fried crabcake was a salad). The kicker was that the filet and shrimp were served with mashed potatoe with blue cheese and the chocolate cake dessert and wine! the next morning i weighed almost 177! well, by cutting back for a day, i got back to 174.6 this AM with new resolve. Have to keep getting that resolve. It’s easy to give up, but then you lose. Yes, Randy everyone has this problem!
Continue the fight. i got to 170.2!! yipppeee! this mornings breakfast was 2 small oranges, a small apple and 1/2 cup blueberries. i’m on a roll now. Really need to up the exercise. Life is so busy. Now my friend Randy has me all messed up reading the China Study. They outlive us and don’t die from heart disease like we do. I may have to give up my bacon and eggs! Darn!
Well, you know i just couldn’t throw that bacon away! I discovered that jalapeno bacon and apples go very good together. 172.2 this AM. still recovering from the 2 pieces of pizza on Monday night. Unbelievable how small indiscretions set you back. Eat your fruit and veges. Make your body work for the protein. Get your seven essential amino acids. Hey, Randy how about a comment on the foods that provide those essential 7?
‘Well after a week at the all inclusive in the Dominican Republic I’m back at the same weight I left at. I pigged out, but mainly on veges, beans, rice and a little sea food. Started reading this darn book, The China Study, and have tried to cut animal products out of my diet to see how it affects my weight, cholesterol and how I feel. So far pretty good. First time I’ve been to an all inclusive and not gained weight. When you read all of the woes of an “affluent” diet, it’s enough to scare the doowaddle out of you. It was really funny sitting in NY eating tofu and brown rice and seeing these 2 Chinese college kids sitting next to me eating double meat cheeseburgers and French fries ( did the French really come up with those?) and thinking about moving to a country and adopting it’s diet and diseases.
Well, Hit a low of 170 pounds for the first time since I can remember. I am at Kenedy Texas covering the ER this weekend and brought my own food. Tabouli salad for lunch which i mixed with the salad from the cafeteria, large apple snack, soy”meat” and vege spaghetti sauce over whole wheat pasta fro dinner large apple for dessert. several Clementine oranges through the day and have a banana for the AM before I fly home. I did have one shrimp the other day, but otherwise have been consistant about staying away from animal products. I even fed my daughter Broccolli, soy chedder and brown rice which she loved. I got her to try soy milk which she didn’t like, but she did like the almond mild.

Well, I am amazed! I seem to always be full and eating and i got to 168.2 on Sunday morning after returning from the ER shift. Hanging with the vegan thing, but have my sights set on that jalapeño burger with inion rings when I make 160 pounds. I figure splurging every now and again won’t hurt. At least I am willing to risk it occasionally. I have been eating whole grain cereal for breakfast with blueberries, blackberries, raspberries and strawberries piled high with a little soy milk to wet it down. Made a huge pot of pinto beans last night and put in some of the fake soy hamburger along with rotel and sauted onions. I remembering doing this kind of diet back in college as a hippie thing, but at that time i was still eating eggs and cheese. More to come.

Well, hanging below 170 still in spite of having a piece of sausage, pepperoni pizza last night and a chicken wing. Don’t worry, I diluted it with 4 light beers. Bill makes a good point, sensible cutbacks. I find that for me the whole food plant based diet did what the sensible cutbacks were not doing. One can still venture out some as I did last night. That, by they way, was die to letting myself rely on someone else bringing food, so there was no other option other than not eating which I chose not to choose. Back to my fresh berries, whole grain cereal and soy milk for breakfast and brought black beans with fake chorizo sausage (tastes like the real thing to me) with brown rice for lunch.

uh oh! what kind of pranks will I have to put up with today? Another day in paradise. Eating from the garden. Just kidding. Just planted it and will be a while. Cereal and Berries for breakfast. Love when fresh berries are happening. Lot’s of beans and lot’s of gas. hanging under 170 in spite of eating a lot. Press on!

Well, a new low at 167.2. I was greatly disappointed to find that my newfound fake cheddar cheese had milk protein in it. Oh well, i guess a little won’t hurt. Got garden mulched yesterday and adjusted water down so you can walk in it without sinking to your knees. Bon apetite (sp).

Hanging in with this vegan deal for the most part (I think the pinto beans and green beans I had last night at the Wednesday night prayer meeting and poker had some meat in in them). Down to 167.8 this AM. I have been eating a lot and going down instead of up. I like this diet. Miss some of the tastes, but for good health it is worth it. I will surely venture out for the tastes of animal protein from time to time, but for the first 2 or 3 months, i will be diligent to see what it does to my blood chemistries. Breakfast was fresh blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, banana with maple cherry granola and almond milk. Enjoy the day.

New low this AM 166.40 can’t remember when Ii saw that one last! Haven’t ventured far from the Vegan diet except a little Parmesan cheese on vege pasta sauce and an eggroll at lunch that had some pork in it. This does require some effort, but it appears to be worth it.

I am amazed! this AM was 165.4 BMI 23.9 2 new records. the last time i remember 165 was in high school when I thought I was getting fat and went on a diet to get back to 155. Of course, I would pull through Jack-in the-Box and get 8 tacos, a double meat bonus jack and curly fries and a real coke! No wonder! I did have an egg roll yesterday with some pork in it. Really, I don’t do this to “save the animals”. I’d shoot a good wall hanger if i saw one, but after looking at the real scientific data, I won’t eat very muck of them (the animals, that is).

Sorry for the long delay. Those of you that know me, know why. Down to 153.2 this morning. thats over 20 pounds! Stress helped with the last few. Anyway, this is the important part. After 8 weeks on this 99% Vegan diet, my cholesterol went from the 230′s to the 160′s. Wow! I have since added a little salmon and shrimp back in the diet (very little) and even had a bite of brisket last night. It tasted great, but felt like a rock in my stomach. If you haven’t read it, read The China Study by Campbell. It scared me into a diet that I used to think was crazy (you know, “don’t want to eat the poor little animals”), but now I embrace for health.
With all of the fad diets, I thought I might try the banana and peanut butter diet. Just have a banana and peanut butter 3 to 6 times a day and see what happens. I’m sure weight will drop and it is vegan! then maybe try the broccoli, beans and rice diet. Could get a little gassy lol. I’m sure it is safer than the Atkins (cardiac special) diet.
Yeah, I don’t know if I can hold the veggie line if I come down to Austin & go to the Salt Lick! That will be a test. Maybe a test I’ll be happy to fail…
Congrats on keeping excess pounds off. I seem to have bottomed out at 168 now after a shocking 217 lbs last summer. Darn near 50 pounds! Just ook a look at age old lifestyles and changed the behavior. No more soda’s (Coke Pepsi), no more junk food, no sweets at night before bed. Sensible cutbacks but can still go out and pig out occasionally, then sharper cut-backs for the next few days. It’s a mind-over-matter thing I guess.
